Since the launch of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) by President Obasanjo in 2004, its implementation has been focused primarily on the oil and gas sector, which has progressed considerably in the past two years with the completion of the independent comprehensive audit of payments, receipts, processes and practices in the oil and gas sector. Nigeria is widely acknowledged for being at the forefront of EITI implementation globally and for its exemplary engagement with Civil Society Groups.
However, the scope of the NEITI also includes the Solid Minerals Sector. It is therefore important that the NEITI shares its empirical knowledge of implementing transparency and due process in the oil & Gas sector with the budding Nigerian Solid Minerals Sector to ensure that mistakes made in the oil & gas sector are not repeated in the Solid Minerals Sector.
